Whether a person is moving into a supported residential living situation for the first time, or whether he is simply moving to a new area, finding the right match with a supporting agency can make the transition smoother. It is a good idea to interview representatives from several provider agencies. Be sure to ask questions about everything that is important to the person and his family, check references and visit if possible. After the move, stay involved. Keep in frequent touch with the person and his staff to be certain the transition continues to be a positive experience.
A person accessing ISL supports would typically live in an apartment or house, alone or with roommates. Support services are customized to the individual's abilities and needs, and may include personal care assistance, transportation, protective oversight, meal preparation, training, etc. Paid support staff come into the individual's home to provide the services. Typical daytime activities for a person living in an ISL may include a day program, work, school or classes, or community activities.
