"Helping people with developmental disabilities live the lives they want to live."
The Sikeston Regional Office is part of the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Developmental Disabilities, established in 1974, which serves a population that has developmental disabilities such as:
The Sikeston office serves eligible citizens in the Southeast Missouri counties of New
Madrid, Pemiscot, Ste. Genevieve,
Perry, Madison, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Scott, and
Mississippi.
At Sikeston Regional Office, each individual served is viewed as a person with the right to achieve his/her wants and needs.
Sikeston Regional Office believes in the principle that people with developmental disabilities have the same
rights as other
citizens. These rights cannot be denied because of race, sex,
creed, marital status, national origin, disability or age.
Sikeston Regional Office's Mission is to ensure the highest quality of supports to people with disabilities, their families, service providers and staff.
It is the policy of the Sikeston Regional Office to treat all citizens without regard to race, color, or national origin. The same requirements for eligibility are applied to all.
The Regional Office seeks to provide services within the community in the most normal and least restrictive settings available to meet the needs of the person.
Records compiled while providing services are confidential. No information about the individual will be released without consent of the individual or the individual's legally responsible party unless otherwise permitted by law. Read our Privacy Notice.
In 1968, under the Warren Hearnes administration, 11 Regional Offices (originally known as diagnostic clinics) were established under the Department of Mental Health, Division of Development Disabilities.
Lynn Feeler, Director of the office from 1986 to 2003, said, "Gov. Hearnes and local legislators labored long and hard to establish one of the facilities in our city of Sikeston. Their efforts not only created jobs, but assisted many persons with disabilities to remain in their own communities, keeping the dollars here also."
1985 brought completion of five eight-bed group homes on the regional office grounds, providing 80 additional jobs. With Habitation Center services now locally available, our citizens who are most severely disabled do not have to travel across the state to Nevada for residential care.
In 1992, the group homes (together with seven at the Poplar Bluff Office) were administratively separated from the Regional Office and are now known as Southeast Missouri Residential Services.
"Lives Beyond Limitations" is the motto driving the office's mission. Sikeston Regional Office now focuses solely on providing services and supports in the community, allowing people with developmental disabilities to live as independently as possible.
Relying on state and federal funds, Sikeston Regional Office employs 55 staff, serves about 900 persons throughout the area, and pumps a total of about $3.4 million into the local economy annually.
