Mission
Working to develop partnerships that support opportunities, choices and community membership.
History
In 1974, St. Louis Developmental Disabilities Treatment Centers (SLDDTC) was created on the grounds of the historic St. Louis State Hospital at 5400 Arsenal Street in the city of St. Louis. We developed as a specialty facility for individuals who had the potential to benefit from intensive medical and habilitation services.
A systematic plan was developed for our move from the Arsenal Street facility to a more community-integrated supportive concept. Two habilitation centers were built and opened in 1983 - Midtown and South County Habilitation Centers. Northwest and St. Charles Habilitation Centers were opened in 1987 and 1988.
Our initial philosophy was and continues to be one of individual responsiveness and community based outcomes. Today, community inclusion and participation are our goals for citizens who are developmentally disabled.
Funding and Certification
There are two types of funding that links with a certification process and guides how our organization provides services. Habilitation centers are funded by a combination of federal and state funds. Federal funds are linked with the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) and we must meet their certification guidelines. The annual survey certification process is conducted and managed by the states Health and Senior Services.
Progressive Employment Options
(P.E.O.)
Employment is a major aspect of any person's life. It offers self-esteem, recognition, responsibility and monetary reward. These are the goals we strive for in securing employment for the people we serve.
A variety of vocational services are offered based on needs identified in the Person Centered Plan.
Our four major employment areas are:
- We help people find jobs in the community by developing job matches and offering job coaching services
- We help cooridnate services with Vocational Rehabilitation for Supported Employment and Sheltered Workshop Employment located at the habilitation center
- We provide a sheltered workshop production area certified by the Department of Labor, including work that consists of contracts with local companies to produce items requiring packaging, assembly, labeling or colating
- We provide supported employment so individuals can work where they live, and gain employable experience in: househkeeping, recycling, dietary or clerical work that supports the staff and residents of SLDDTC
